10 Distance Education Issues
Privacy and Surveillance

For the protection of privacy of faculty-student and student-student communications, there should be a presumption of privacy in DE courses, expressly written in contract or policy language. To this end, every effort should be made by the
institution to “secure” insecure environments.

In the case of management observation/evaluation of faculty in an online environment, clearly defined parameters, along with unambiguous notification, should exist as to when management has access to an online class or other student/
teacher learning spaces.

We recommend following "A Framework for Contract Negotiations Related to Educational Technology Issues" by the Community College Council of the California Federation of Teachers’ (CFT) Distance Education and Technology Issues Committee.
