When preparing to develop and teach an online class, what kinds of things should a faculty member think about? What do you think might be some basic, general principles of effective organization in an online class?

To be an effective online instructor, how might you go about establishing a strong sense of instructor presence/immediacy? How will your students know you're really there? How do you convey your personality when, in most cases, students cannot physically hear or see you?

If your students aren't physically in the same room together, how might you go about establishing some sense of community? (What does that even mean, anyway?) How do you get students--who might be nervous, shy, apathetic--to participate actively and interact with one another?

What are your thoughts on how to go about offering a challenging and academically rigorous yet flexible online course? If you cannot ultimately know that it's the student doing the student's work, how to maintain high academic standards? Since it's harder to get a sense of who your students are, how can you judge when and how to be flexible?
